We are looking for an experienced Data Engineer to design, build and maintain the data pipelines that underpin large-scale public health surveillance data. You will work alongside epidemiologists, data scientists and other technical staff to turn business needs into robust, well-documented technical solutions, and play a key role in ensuring the quality and reliability of critical health data. Key responsibilities Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines (ETL/ELT) for ingesting, transforming, and integrating data from multiple sources Ensure data quality, validation, and consistency across datasets Optimise data storage and retrieval performance Work closely with epidemiologists, data scientists, and other client staff to translate business needs into technical solutions Maintain documentation for data pipelines, models, and systems Troubleshoot and resolve data-related issues in production environments Required profile University degree in computer science, data science, data engineering or a related field, with at least 3 years’ experience in data engineering or a closely related role OR a non-university degree with at least 5 years’ relevant experience At least 3 years’ experience (within the last 5 years) using scripting languages such as R or Python At least 3 years’ experience (within the last 5 years) handling large, complex data sets using SQL and NoSQL databases, particularly SQL for large complex dataset handling At least 3 years’ experience (within the last 5 years) using ETL/ELT tools and data integration frameworks English at CEFR B2 level or higher, written and spoken Advantageous experience (6+ months within the last 5 years) Experience in public health, epidemiology, or healthcare-related data systems Experience working with surveillance data or large-scale health datasets Experience with workflow orchestration tools DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines Experience working in a cloud environment, particularly the Azure ecosystem Practical details Engagement Freelance / contractor assignment via a multi-year framework agreement (initial term up to 48 months, with ongoing task orders) Location Remote / off-site, based anywhere within the EU or EEA, with occasional on-site collaboration at the client’s premises (up to c. 4 weeks per year) Working pattern Full-time, standard business hours, aligned with the client’s core working hours Language English at CEFR B2 level or higher (written and spoken) Start Rolling — candidates shortlisted on an ongoing basis Apply Now Skillbourg Show more Show less Seniority level Not Applicable Employment type Full-time Job function Information Technology Industries Newspaper Publishing
